The quote by Gelfand at the end had inspired me to read a very nice book by Alexander Borovik: Mathematics under the Microscope. He also writes a blog. In his blog he mentions that Wigner’s essay and Gelfand’s (who had a major interest in theoretical and mathematical biology) observations made him think enough to write the book. I had been thinking of writing about it for a while! Too bad I procrastinated. :)
